Sunburn
by Chloe Michelle Howarth
holy shit ??????? I have a tummy ache from how good this was brb gotta gather my thoughts
beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Howarth has an incredible knack for prose and characters, and I am so excited to see where she goes from here. I don't know if I've ever underlined as many passages as I did in this book - the writing is indescribably good. Full of Catholic imagery interwoven with her "sinful" nature, Lucy is pulled in every direction except the one she really wants to go in. Sunburn explores compulsory heterosexuality and the grip it has on women, the fear of being outed, the fear of not being out, the rollercoaster of teenage infatuation and the devastating nature of first love. It is fantastically frustrating and heartbreaking, passionate, all-consuming, and encapsulates the immediacy of being at a critical point in adulthood while still clinging on to the people and traditions of your past while attempting to forge your own future.
An INCREDIBLE debut that I'm already rereading.
