Bright Steel by Miles Cameron

4.0

A solid 3.5. The world building is great, though, a lot is directly taken from Earth around modern Istanbul. The magic system both over- and under explained.

The MC is too OP by the end. Not in direct power per se, though he's grown an insane amount in the year the books last, but in terms of figuring out everything. The other characters and especially their interactions are great.

The pacing is an issue throughout and while the ending is as it should be in terms of plot and characters, it's just way too short.

There are multiple references to Roman (both Western and Eastern) history, several leaps into classic Philosophy, an intro to the psychological effects of warfare, and general ideas about government and leadership roles. All well done but it also seemed thrown in at times just to impress the reader. We got it from the first book. The author is an intelligent person. I'm still not a fan of the writing style.
