This is basically a retelling of [b:The Last Colony|88071|The Last Colony (Old Man's War, #3)|John Scalzi|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1437660786l/88071._SY75_.jpg|18279847], but from Zoe's point of view. You get an emotional telling of what Zoe has been going through; with the death of her real father, being with John and Jane; having Obin protection and making grown up decisions to save those she loves. She's feisty.
You do not have to read this book to continue with the series. It just gives it more nuance.
