Never Fall Down by Patricia McCormick

-CONTENT WARNING: Violence-

"Never Fall Down" is a biographical story of Arn Chorn-Pond, a survivor of the Cambodian genocide committed by the Khmer Rouge in 1975. Arn tells of his capture, imprisonment, and forced labor, all through the voice of a young and scared little boy. Eventually he is made to become a Khmer Rouge soldier, fighting in favor of the very people who oppress him.

This book is easily one of the most chilling that I've ever read. The violent acts described made my skin crawl to read about, and more than once I had to take a break from reading and go do something else for awhile, if only to remind myself that the world isn't the pitch black pit of horribleness that reading about situations such as these makes me think it is. I have a pretty thick skin when it comes to books, but the horrors described here really tested it. And yet, I couldn't stop reading. I had to know how everything was going to end, and to ensure that everyone was going to be okay. Even though in stories like this, it is almost impossible for everyone and everything to end up okay, I hoped for it anyway. For a story to make me that emotionally invested, I give my biggest accolades.
