Red Rising
by Pierce Brown
Firstly, I read Will of the Many before this, which didn't do it favours. Secondly, I've been assured the hill goes up, so I will read at least the first trilogy.
A very mixed bag to me, pacing issues, I didn't find Darrow compelling, more of a facsimile of a character built around a tragic event. I personally have no issue with dark themes and scenes such as rape and sexual assault being used as devices, but male character development via the sexual peril of female characters is amateur hour shit. I am aware that this was his first publication, so I am forgiving to an extent, but I was getting the ick during certain moments.
To address a more specific pacing issue, while I was being told outright that (relatively) large amounts of time were passing during certain arcs, I had a hard time actually feeling the presence of these time skips. Very much a set up book, and by the end I definitely was at least interested in continuing.
Overall, it felt extremely shonen, so I get the YA label people give it. Sevro's the best character in this book btw.
