The Promise
by Damon Galgut
Outstanding narrative treatment of the members of a white South African family as they live and die all bound to, or attempting to escape a promise made by the dying mother. The floating narrator confuses at first until one gets used to the quickly changing pronouns, but by the end of the novel, it seems such a natural and refreshing way to bring the stories and minds of characters to the reader. A deserved Booker. I've been lucky enough to read Milkman, The Testaments, Shuggie Bain, and The Promise this year and I loved them all so much. Thanks Booker Prize, for bringing them to my attention!
