Before She Knew Him by Peter Swanson
4.0
If you are a thriller/mystery genre-loving reader, then this is a book that will not disappoint. The premise is already intriguing, but the story's execution keeps you on your toes and afterward provides some thought-provoking reflection once done reading.
Throughout this story, many complex themes stay with you once done reading; one theme highlighted throughout the book is the abuse and objectification towards women, which all characters deal and cope with differently.
Having the main character, Hen, have a mental illness provided high stakes throughout the story since others consistently viewed her as an unreliable witness to the atrocities committed by her neighbor, Matthew. Having her repeatedly viewed as "crazy" by the other characters was realistic since we live in a society that very much is antagonistic towards people with mental illness kept the story moving forward. As a reader, you never knew what would happen next.
This fast-paced story with twists and turns throughout was a delight to read. I look forward to reading more books from this author.
