A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers

5.0

Would I call this feminist? No, not really. Would I call this a good time? Hell yes.
This book features beautiful writing, hilarious interjections that made me laugh out loud, and just enough gore to make my face scrunch. I questioned what kind of person I was for reading it, and for thoroughly enjoying it.
I don’t annotate my fiction books much, but just like Bunny by Mona Awad, this is getting re-read and annotated for expertise in writing and literary analysis. It’s that genius.

I read some reviews that said this book has little plot, and while it doesn’t follow a traditional plot line, I was still along for the entire ride, enjoying everything from the anecdotes to the random facts about animal slaughter. It made me want to cook, and put effort into some delicious cookies. I think the book girlies might call this one “no plot only vibes,” but I think that’s selling it short.
While the narrator does make some jabs and remarks about white-privilege and gender roles, and herself defies many expectations of women, I still wouldn’t neccesarily call this book feminist. I’ve seen this categorized as “female rage” and I think that might be more fitting. I think these categories are both mostly marketing, but the writing style, the characterization, and the subtle through lines are what make this a work of genius.

Nothing else to say except I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
