The Collected Regrets of Clover by Mikki Brammer

5.0

Death was something Clover Brooks never had a chance to shy away from. After the sudden death of her kindergarten teacher in front of the class followed shortly by the death of her parents on a trip abroad, death became something deeply embedded into Clover’s consciousness. It’s no wonder that after being raised by her biologist grandfather starting at the age of 6 she pursued the study of the end of life. The death of her grandfather during her studies abroad brings her home to New York where she begins her career as a death doula, guiding people through their final stages of life and making sure those with no one around don’t have to face death alone. It’s through these clients that Clover learns so much about life, through shared regrets and bits of wisdom she’s able to piece together an understanding of the world around her. One client in particular sends her on a search for a long lost love and Clover learns some of the most valuable lessons of all.

This is a novel that will absolutely stick with me for a long time, I was crying by the end! Getting to know Clover and meander through her life of solitude, riding the waves as everything in her life gets turned inside out was so much fun. I’m not normally someone who enjoys a romance so the more subtle romantic themes and storylines in this book were perfect. Clover’s solitude and lonerism reminded me of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine but Clover was far more self aware and knew her shortcomings which made this character more tolerable. I’m so so glad I decided to try something outside of my normal picks!
