dancermom 's review for:
The Orchid Thief
by Susan Orlean
Fabulous, spellbinding and stupendous are the first adjectives that come to mind. Susan Orlean can turn any subject into a fascinating journey. Who knew there were swashbuckling orchid thieves!
I listened to the audio version read by Anna Fields who does a great job with the lyrical cadence of Orlean's prose like this description of Chief Billy:
"When he returned to Florida he became a hairdresser and hunting guide. By his own description he was a young, fuzzy headed, Vietnam veteran, alligator wrestling, hippy-looking guy wearing bellbottoms. In his spare time he tried to cook up ways for the tribe to earn money."
I had seen the very strange movie called Adaptation which was loosely based on the book and had a stellar cast but I didn't have any idea what to make of it. After reading the book I watched it again with more interest but still confused.
Book gets my highest recommendation.
