This book follows the most unlikeable, problematic and racist character ever, and I applaud Kuang for being able to write such a frustrating character so well. This book seems to be a critique on the publishing industry and on literary snobism, and it really managed to convey that message (maybe a bit too on the nose). The story and ending were a bit grim, but realistic nonetheless.
R.F. Kuang is one of my favourite authors and this book is an interesting addition to her works. However, I don't think this book would stand out to me if it were not written by her. This book was triggering sometimes for me as someone of Chinese descent, so keep that in mind when reading this book!
