*thank you to good girls pr & the author for an arc. I am providing an honest review voluntarily after reading*
I didn't read the first book (yet!) and though I could guess from context clues as to what happened in the first book, I didn't feel like I was missing out too much on book one's information ("The Spare" is about Henry's younger sister Sloan and Marcus). This could absolutely be read as a standalone.
In this book, you'll find:
-New York City-based dates and romance
-workplace romance
-forced proximity
-antagonists to lovers
-possessive love interest
-billionaire romance
-Mexican FMC, half-Indian MMC (I don't know the author's background, but I *think* this is partly ownvoices!)
-mysterious background of FMC
Selena Montez is hoping for a promotion and transfer to the LA branch of her PR firm. She is hired by Henry Amari's sister Sloan to improve his image in the public eye after a string of salacious scandals. During her last job in working for another wealthy family (the Waldorfs), she signed an NDA and cannot talk about what happened between her and the clients. The reveal of this information later was quite fun, and not what I was expecting!
As far as the romance between Henry and Sloan, I loved the slower burn of it, with no steam happening until about 50% of the book. Once their romance began though, the smutty scenes were a lot of fun! Whenever I read about rich/famous people, I appreciate that the authors weave in a bit of a commentary about the media and the role it plays in stirring up conflict, and how unhealthy of a lifestyle that can feel sometimes. I can only imagine, & I never, ever want to be in the public eye. I don't typically seek out billionaire romance because I have an aversion to the disgustingly rich, but I love seeing people of color thriving in this series!
I enjoyed Henry & Selena's story, and I especially loved their "Night at the Museum" date!
steam rating: 3.5/5
cw: bullying (I think the toxic ways in which the media perpetuates harmful narratives could be considered bullying, not sorry!), classism (both external and internalized), injury detail, violence (FMC punches someone), toxic relationship, stalking/harrassment (someone from Selena's past continues to contact her despite her repeated rejections)
