To Have and to Hoax by Martha Waters

lighthearted

3.0

Listen... perhaps as someone who loathes any sort of deception in romance, I should have known better than to read a book that literally has "hoax" in the title. Surprise surprise, I took issue with the whole "faking consumption" plotline (I think if James had believed it for any longer, it would have been intolerable and cruel, but since he found out quickly and it became something of a game between them I became more okay with it). And I found Violet in general immature, petty, short-tempered and obnoxious. But I did enjoy the tone and style, I liked James, and I appreciated that their friends were constantly saying what I as a reader was thinking and trying to talk some sense into them.
