An Apprenticeship, or the Book of Pleasures by Clarice Lispector

3.0

I think when I started this book I was looking for a romantic relationship to already be there, between Lori and Ulisses. Once I put that thought away, I was actually able to enjoy the book (some parts). I love the idea or concept of a woman or man loving themselves before pursuing a relationship. I wish in the end that the only person Lori fell in love with would’ve been herself. The influence of men were so strong in this book to me. The way Lori dressed, the way she wanted to say things innocently, Ulisses comments about cleanliness, etc. This isn’t me hating on the book itself, but the characters traits. If anything the author did a great job portraying a man’s way of thinking. Ulisses to me was just a man, that’s it. A regular man. Lori was much more special and interesting. I think the best love story, or apprenticeship, to come out of this book was between Lori and Lori.

“I am being.”
