Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith
4.0
I was nervous to revisit this book after last having read it in my late teens. But Betty Smith TOTALLY delivers, and this holds up after decades of my own life and many more decades post-publication.
Smith hits the nail on the head in so many ways; her experience of young marriage being somewhat similar to mine, I especially appreciate the character of Annie and how much I identify with her. Smith's pacing is absolutely masterful-- her ability to drop into moments and then move the story forward is what makes her writing so brilliant.
