I hope the author sought to create a truly maladaptive emotionally unstable wreck of a protagonist who was given a hard dose of reality.. but I still wonder if some of the riffing didn’t approach too much a level of unobservant first wave feminism to make me think the author was truly out of touch with reality as well.. the levels of abhorrent racism and homophobia in this book far exceed the “not-pc” label I see attached to it regularly… this one is unpleasant and vile in a way that has nothing to do with a way that it regards the intricacies and complexity surrounding sexuality. A difficult and unenjoyable read, albeit with some good lines and creativity. This entire premise is ultimately accomplished far more successfully in my year of rest and relaxation so I feel it can be skipped.
