Our Finest Hour
by Jennifer Millikin
3.5 stars
Aubrey has been dumped by her boyfriend without warning and her best friend, Britt, just wants to cheer her up so drags her to a bar one night, and even suggests she find a man for a one night stand. Aubrey isn’t interested though and is about to leave when she meets Isaac.
They promise each other one hour and no more. Isaac is about to leave the country for work, and Aubrey isn’t interested in a relationship with anyone. So some weeks later when she finds out she’s pregnant she has no way of telling him. They never exchanged numbers or even last names.
Cut to four years later and Aubrey’s daughter, Claire, breaks her arm. The hospital brings in a specialist to do the surgery, and the surgeon is none other than Isaac. He figures out that Claire is his and desperately wants to be in her life. Can he and Aubrey co-parent like champs? Or will their undeniable attraction ruin things for them all?
I read a fair few mixed reviews on this but I really enjoyed it. I can understand why Aubrey was so apprehensive to let Isaac into her life and her heart. But Isaac was just too adorable. He wanted to be Claire’s dad so much that he would do anything asked of him. And he ultimately wanted to be with Aubrey too. He was so gentle and understanding, never really pushing her too far for fear she’d run the other way.
Jenna was a totally pointless character. That whole thing was resolved so early in the book that ultimately nothing would have changed if she actually didn’t even exist. I thought maybe we’d get more drama, more angst from her involvement.
I feel a little robbed of Aubrey confronting her mother. Very anticlimactic on that part. It’s great that she was the bigger person and realised what she has but I was gearing up for a little showdown.
Also, zero smut. It was all fade to black or closed door which didn’t feel right for this book. Maybe that’s just me as I like a side (or main) of smut with my romance but I did find that a little disappointing.
All in all, a lovely story with relatable characters.
