The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Did not finish book.
I only got a very little way into this. I'd been putting it off for ages as I felt it may hit too close to home, but I love the author's other work, so finally dove in. I didn't read enough to give a fair review other than this simply wasn't for me. I could tell almost immediately that I didn't like the main character enough to root for her or be interested in her story. The whole thing (premise, character, writing style) was coming across as being somewhat patronising, smug and disingenuous.

One of Haig's other novels, The Humans, is an all-time favourite of mine, and deals with similar themes in a unique way; it's subtle and beautiful. I'll re-read that instead.
