Red Seas Under Red Skies
by Scott Lynch
A good second entry into the series, it was very fun to read Jean and Locke's characters again and the introduction of the new cast of characters was probably the strength of this book. I did really enjoy the story, but it gets 4 stars rather than 5 because think it suffered a little from trying to do too much. There wound up being so many different schemes and plots being juggled by Jean and Locke that I think it would have been better to have resolved some earlier as introductions to introduce the main plot rather than having 3 or more ongoing plans. As a result of trying to resolve so many different threads, the ending of the book felt rushed and some aspects were felt closer to deus ex machina ploys rather than more clever or realistic solutions. Some other decisions in the plot also felt as if they were made because this book was setting up the future entries in the series and so certain aspects had to happen for that sake to preserve the format of the series rather than more satisfying resolutions in this story. All that said, I am still quite looking forward to reading the third in the series in the near future.
