Complete disappointment. It had some good parts: a lot of missing information from previous books was provided here, and Cassia's mother's secondary plot was well implemented. However, there was a point where the murdered mermaid's plot became secondary, and the whole book was about the mother. The resolution on the murder was, yet again, resolved within the last 10 pages of the book, and it looks completely taken out of the blue. There were no hints whatsoever for the ending to be that way. Usually, in a mystery book, you're given hints for you to try to resolve what's going on. This one didn't have that and completely focused on the secondary plot to out of nowhere tell you "Here is what actually happened" in the last 10 pages. Again, the secondary plot was good, but the main murder mystery itself was a fiasco.
