Gallant by V.E. Schwab

”When people see tears, they stop listening to your hands or your words or anything else you have to say. And it doesn't matter if the tears are angry or sad, frightened or frustrated. All they see is a girl crying.”

Really enjoyed reading this one! I was a little unsure going into this book because of the lower rating, but I found that the rating should definitely be higher.

The story was really interesting and through the majority of the book I couldn’t figure out how it would end. It was written in a very secretive way and you weren’t given any clues as to how it would progress, which I enjoyed.

I liked the simplicity of the story and how we got to follow the mc in how and what we learned about the situation. We, as readers, never got to know anything more than Olivia knew herself. I enjoy stories like this, where the reader is finding everything out at the same time as the character.
I really liked Olivia overall. Since she’s deaf we got a lot of inner monologue and I really enjoyed to follow her thoughts.

Both the character and the story are written very simple manner and I can see how that can put some people off, but I wasn’t to bothered about it. The only other book I’ve read from Schwab is Vicious and I gave that one two stars, so I was pleasantly surprised then I found that I enjoyed one of her lower rated books more. Overall, Vicious and Gallant are two very different books. Vicious is heavy on the characters and world building, while Gallant is more simple in every way. It doesn’t spent much time exploring the characters or the world. Weather you will like Gallant will most likely depend on what type of books you like.
