This historical fiction takes place in the late 1800s during part of the Cuban War for Independence and the Spanish-American war. The story is told from the perspective of three women, Evangelina Cisneros, Marina Perez, and Grace Harrington. My favorite character was Grace. She works as a reporter for the New York Journal, a paper belonging to the famous Randolph Hearst. She wants to be taken seriously as a reporter and finds herself covering the story of Evangelina Cisneros, a women who has been unjustly imprisoned in Cuba. Grace is driven, witty, and completely sure of herself.

I love how the author mixed real life events and people with fictitious characters. I learned a lot about the Spanish-American war, which was very interesting. I found the questions posed by this book about the purpose of the free press very relevant to today’s world. A great read.
