What Happened to Nina?
by Dervla McTiernan
slow-paced
Loveable characters:
No
This book pissed me off.
Clearly a ‘ripped from the headlines’ Gabby Petito inspired plot, which I wouldn’t mind as much if it wasn’t so painfully slow and repetitive.
There are MULTIPLE pov’s in this book, which I wouldn’t be bothered by so much if they didn’t simply repeat the same scene from 3 different perspectives, providing little to no additional information.
This didn’t help the pacing which felt sluggish.
The characters were also entirely unlikeable, even the parents of Nina who I feel like I was supposed to root for. They all made such stupid decisions, and I think the author is trying to make a point of ‘what would YOU do if your child/partner/loved one committed a crime?!’
Ma’am, I would contact the police. Because covering up a crime never works. I’m all for characters being flawed and emotional but so many decisions made had me actively angry.
This book overall just felt like a colossal waste of my time and Spotify listening hours.
