Black Canary, Volume 1: Kicking and Screaming by Brenden Fletcher

3.0

Neat book. Owes a lot to Fraction/Aja/Hollingsworth’s Hawkeye series, and not just because they share an artist in Annie Wu. It replicates Hawkeye’s stripped down, simple atmosphere but adds the almost AU feel of the Batgirl of Burnside series that BC spun out of. The art is great and there are some clever layouts but it’s the colours that stand out, especially in the depiction of sound and music. The plot is okay and honestly a little confusing in places but I’m a sucker for stories about bands AND protect the kid tropes so it worked for me. The ending is whatever but there’s another volume so we’ll see where it all goes.
