Interesting ideas but weirdly lacking in self-confidence.

Every little event or thought has to be punctuated with a very explicit and literal link to the wider context of the setting, the oppression of the Mandate and the problems of revolution, as if he doesn't trust us to remember what's happening.

Then the big revelation of what was going on was too late, long after it might have surprised and with minimal exploration of interesting consequences
