I really like Mary Balogh and I think this was a good romance for both characters. However, as with the other books in this series, I think it needs an edit - I’m not sure if publishers just aren’t doing that anymore, but there are things that feel repetitive and overly descriptive. When you’re used to Balogh’s writing it’s not so bad, hence it’s still a pretty good rating from me, but even knowing and appreciating Balogh’s more formal style, there are repetitive sentences in narration and dialogue.

Aside from that, this family at the centre of the series is really compelling. The emotion and complexity at the centre of the family conflict from book 1 that all characters are still kind of dealing with is really well done and I appreciate seeing all the different perspectives. Something Balogh has done incredibly well is let each character have their perception of the previous Earl without having to have the same perception or Truth about him.

In this case Ben and Jennifer were a really great couple. I like that her disability was never the problem in the relationship except when Ben  oversteps. I do wish
Ben would have claimed Clarissa as his mother to his biological aunt, as his daughter will be claiming Jennifer as “mama” so it’s clear that someone can have two mothers
but yeah overall liked how the MCs came together.
