SCUM Manifesto by Valerie Solanas

challenging funny informative fast-paced

4.0

I avoided this for years because people told me Valerie Solanas was crazy. And she definitely is but she's a tempest, decimating everything in her path with her volatile energy and palpable malice. The SCUM Manifesto is utterly scathing and doesn't hesitate to pull any punches. At times, I found myself stifling a laugh because her insults towards men are so harsh and insanely worded. I would love to see a roast challenge Valerie Solanas and Azealia Banks. This certainly is a problematic text and I disagreed with various things. But I loved the insight on the destruction of capitalism, men's domination over culture and art, familial relationships, and the fact that men are not the valiant leaders they think they are. Men truly at the end of the day want to defer to a Mama but masquerade with their masculine valor. A powerful ode to unapologetic and fierce women.
