TW: child rape, incest, domestic violence, colonialism, death, racism
Wow this was a powerful story. I was not prepared for any of it. There were many unexpected twists and turns throughout the story. The method of story telling was quite beautiful. It stuck to the characters lives and never spoke about what was happening outside their lives except for a few lines in passing, that directly correlated to their lives, which reflected that the United States had entered WWI.
This was a hard read, but I believe an important one. I'm glad my banned book club led me here, because I probably would not have picked this book up otherwise.
