Pandora's Jar: Women in the Greek Myths by Natalie Haynes

4.0

this was an incredible literary piece! i learned so much more about greek history and mythology from this collection of women's "points of view" than i did half-listening to any professor ramble on about the exploits of men in the iliad and the odyssey. i appreciate this book A LOT. very well-researched, with tons of resources and references that i too will look up to further immerse myself in these women's stories. their narratives are much more poignant and relevant, filled with intense emotions — from love to rage. also, the humor!!! i loved how fitting the punchlines were. they were impactful, and didn't feel forced.

my only qualms are that some of the chapters got a little repetitive (ex. phaedra, eurydice). if there's nothing to tell, don't force it; also the lack of cassandra representation!!!! she is a character with so much depth, i had hoped she was in this book. anyway, i hope this and divine might are not the last of natalie haynes' books giving voice to popular women in myths.

it's true that why wouldn't we want to know the women's side? they're part of the story too!
