I knew I shouldn't have listened to the hype. I read this based on Ron Charles' review in the Washington Post and Steven King's recommendation on Mastodon. I finished it so by my personal rating system I gave it a 3 but I'm not reading anything else by this author.
I generally agree with the review by https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/17295672-jaidee who REALLY hated the book. Essentially, everyone except Neda's parents are despicable and they all smoke and drink to excess all the time. Characters do things because they are drunk. They become drunks because of the things they do. Not my kind of book.
