It was horrifying, reading it as an adult and understanding exactly what Katniss is experiencing. The writing is excellent. Even while Katniss is mentally "disturbed," you can relate to her as a character going through truama. You experience the horrors of war while "living" through it with her. As a girl of only 17 years old, she tossed between people who each want to use her for their own person agenda and then either kill her or forget about her afterwards. As we're reading we experience her personal pain, depression, hopelessness, and sadness. We see how the war traumatizes her over and over again. It's shocking, horrible, and terrifying.
