1.5

With my rating system being:

<1 Finished it but wished I had DNFed instead. Several major criticisms.
1 Not the worst thing I've ever read but wouldn’t read it again; probably one major gripe.
2 Meh. No major sins but but don’t like it enough to buy a physical copy. It's fine. Just fine.
3 Liked it and will casually seek out a physical copy to have in my library
4 Thoroughly enjoyed it and have no major criticisms; will recommend to others, read again, and consider a special edition version
5 ABSOLUTELY FERAL FOR THIS BOOK, will not shut up about it, will maniacally and immediately seek out a special edition and/or bind one

I’m giving this a 1.5, I think. I can’t quite tell if that’s objective or if my own personal baggage was making this book more noisome than it would be otherwise, but I had MAJOR issues with how the FMC and MMC related to each other. Like, suuuuuuper toxic habits and behaviors that weren’t addressed in any way, so the FMC isn’t self aware and maybe the author isn’t either, and thinks that kind of dynamic is okay? I don’t know but it just rubbed me the wrong way and reminded me a lot of where I came from and how much work I had to do to undo all those kinds of assumptions.

Beyond that, the plot seems very thin on the ground. Too much vague hinting and not enough meat to truly care about what happens next. I started the sequel and pretty quickly DNFed because I just didn’t care.
