84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff

funny lighthearted fast-paced

4.75

i have been wanting to read this for so long and have only now found a copy. as such, despite my having a physics exam on monday, i put off studying for it to read this charming book in a single sitting.

if you know me, you would know that i thoroughly enjoy books written in an epistolary style. i also thoroughly enjoy books written about books. it is such luck that “84” is written about both!

i found this book very charming. it was tender and funny and said so much in so little pages. i enjoyed the “characters” — to call them “characters” feels odd, as they were people, but all those in books are characters to me, so i’ll keep using the term — and their relationships with helene. i enjoyed the picture the letters painted of england, of marks and co, and if it wasn’t closed down i would have loved to step into the shop and experience what is so prettily described in the book.

it hurt that their correspondence ended with frank’s death, and that they never quite had the chance to meet. but i am quite thankful that miss haffe thought to pen their letters down in a novel, as i — and from the way this has been received, many others — am so privileged to have been able to read them.

what a charming little book. you did not disappoint in the slightest (the same cannot be said for pepy’s diary, though) ❤️
