I saw this in the bookstore and had some rewards points, so thought why the heck not and now here we are.
This was a lot more intense than I was expecting in the political, court intrigue-y way and I have to give kudos to the ending because I want to read the second and third books like right now.
2022 reread
Got to admit that this held up rather spectacularly, I imagined that I wouldn't enjoy rereading it because of all the graphic sexual assault and rape, but once again the court intrigue and dynamic that Laurent and Damen share got me good. Also had a fun realisation abouthow Laurent and his uncle interact, and how that is probably because of Laurent being sexually assaulted by him in the past, resulting in his 'frigidness'. we shall see if that is the case in the rest of the trilogy I suppose. fun times.
2024 reread
I haven't had the slightest desire to reread these books since finishing the trilogy in 2022, and then suddenly there was nothing else I wanted to read at all (other than Wind and Truth, which I haven't got yet but will have later today). All that to say, this is exactly the vibe I wanted, political intrigue and tension and characters who I love and fit into these roles. It's delicious. Even more delicious is that I now know that Laurent and Damen are inspired by Griffith and Guts from Berserk and like yesss. It's all tasty as hell. Also I feel very satisfied knowing that when I read this last time I called the fuck out of one of the reveals that happens in like ... Kings Rising.
