April 2025 update: I'm...confused. I rarely give a book 5 stars, but I remember loving the self-published edition when I read it. But I'm reading the trad published one now and it's a massive disappointment.
If the self-pubbed version is anything like this, I have no idea why I gave it 5 stars. The insta-love has me gagging. I'm only 98 pages in but it feels chaotic already, like it was poorly edited (or I guess just poorly written, depending on how different this is from the original).
I ordered a used copy of the original book just so I can re-read it to see how different it is.
-------
The only thing I regret about this book is that I didn't read it sooner.
Some romantasy books are overhyped, but not this one. It deserves all the praise it's gotten, and I'm agonized by the fact that the sequel will release in 2025.
Elowen is a broken princess who rebuilt herself into a formidable queen. Cayden is a scarred boy who patched himself together into a fierce protector. Ryder, Saskia, and Finnian are the best friends these two could've ever asked for, and their group dynamic is supportive and playful and just right.
The book is balanced beautifully between plot and romance, and the tension built organically throughout the read. I read the ebook but will absolutely be buying the finished book, marking it up, and making my husband read it.
