Imma be honest, I don’t understand why she was living on the streets.
I assumed that the reason she made a run for it after her father died (thus abandoning an inheritance she might’ve been entitled to) was bc if anyone found out who she was, her life would be forfeit.
Except… she doesn’t even try to hide who she is?? Not even with the son of the man she believes killed her father??
That man being the king, might I add. And I don’t mean that she thinks the king ordered her father’s death—no. She thinks that the KING—someone with countless minions and a reputation to uphold—personally snuck into her home and murdered her father and then… just… left?? Even if he DID do that, why would he leave Paedyn, the only daughter of someone suspected to associate with the Resistance, alive?????

And wtf is up with the trials??
The King’s whole brand is Elite supremacy. Why would he task some of his strongest and most promising Elite’s with killing each other?? And it’s not like they’re a bunch of expendable nobodies, either. Most of the contestants are the sons and daughters of Important People™️. People you’d think he’d want to avoid pissing off by sentencing their children to death.

Do all these Mega-evil Monarchs in YA fantasy share one brain cell? No wonder the horny teenagers (who can’t stfu about that one time one of them threatened the other with a knife to the throat) always win.
