The Couple
by Helly Acton
4.5⭐
This was such a cute, unique, funny and brilliant read!
I loved the premise, which I thought was so clever. In the author's note, Helly Acton said the book was inspired not by a single moment, but "a series of being single moments", and that she wrote The Couple to "shut down the single pity party and put relationships attitudes into reverse".
I also really enjoyed how the book is set in a dystopian-like world: Being "in a couple" is not only frowned upon, but also subjects you and your partner to discrimination such as:
- Extra taxes
- Higher rent as "two people cause twice the damage"
- Inflated insurance fees because "couples have a higher risk of suffering from mental stress".
Awesome world-building aside, the lingo (i.e. having sex is known as Sliding) was also really fun!
One of my favourite things about this book is that the male love interest, Ben, was never a jerk to anyone. He was so sweet and funny and charming! I loved all of his scenes and the hangman puzzles were so cute.
The only minor downside is that I would have loved to hear more from the other couples who got interviewed and Millie's friends. But overall, this was an absolute delight to read!
