The Annotated Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
4.0
If you want to read Lolita, read an unannotated version first. The annotated version is thorough to the point of overwhelming. Plus Appel's own commentary can become tedious and too helpful. For example, at one point when Humbert Humbert mentions the music & magazines Lolita enjoys, one of the annotations suggests listening to a CD compilation of 50's music or finding preserved magazines covers from that time period. Appel then waxes poetic on how this will allow the readers to "truly enjoy" the atmosphere of the book.
