The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen

5.0

"You win your people or you lose your throne."

Kelsea Raleigh has been raised in solitude with her only companionship a couple who promised her mother, the Queen of the Tearling, to protect her and teach her how to be a ruler. On her nineteenth birthday the Queen’s guard arrive to take her back to The Keep but Kelsea soon learns that there are many, including her Uncle, the Regent and the Red Queen, the evil ruler of neighboring Mortmesne that will do anything to make sure she doesn't arrive alive.

The first in a trilogy there is not the intricate world-building that you expect in fantasy which lends to its quick-paced, plot driven style. Dramatic and descriptive, I was intrigued by the medieval feel while it was set in the future after a cataclysmic event that annihilated human advances. I hesitate to say it fits in new adult but it hits a lot of the firsts-coming of age, first romance, first leaving home, first job...granted it’s just a piddly Queen gig. lol, ok, i’ll hush.

Movie rights have been sold and they are teasing Emma Watson as Kelsea.
