I read this to find out if I’d hate it as much as I did when I read it for my English major. Long story short, I did.
The characterization falls really flat for me. Characters feel like they start doing random things for no reason, with just a couple of exceptions. I also really don’t get the whole Heathcliff/Catherine thing. It feels like it comes out of nowhere and then suddenly I am supposed to just accept it as a central feature of the book. Peak tell don’t show. Maybe I’d get it if I read it a third time, but I probably won’t.
Don’t go into this expecting romance. Go into it expecting to hate everyone and want to write a graduate dissertation when you finish.
