Medusa [Illustrated Gift Edition]
by Jessie Burton
The book promises us a modern feminist retelling of Medusa’s story from her perspective, which I don’t think was successfully delivered. The modern parts often made the novel feel like a Wattpad book unfortunately.
I wanted this book to be so much more than Medusa rotting in an island, putting all her dreams and hopes on a man that she barely knows and calls it love. Not to mention that the plot was just two people getting to know each other, spewing facts. Perseus even said, “Zeus was my dad and everything…” Why on earth would he talk like that? It kills the whole mood of the story and makes it sound very unserious.
I thought we would be introduced to a new version of the story, a quality storytelling from a refreshing perspective but this book lacked that dimension.
I will say the writer can have a way with words as some parts of the book was beautifully written. I just wished it would feel less biographic and didn’t lack that creativity one searches for in novels.
