Hakim's Odyssey: Book 3: From Macedonia to France by Fabien Toulmé

5.0

This series has just been soo important for me. I think we often view refugees as a great horde of "other" and forget that they are, instead, thousands and thousands of individual human beings, with thousands and thousands of different stories and experiences that led to their decision to leave their homes. What a great job this series has done of humanizing one man, and by doing that reminding us that each refugee is one human. I cried at Hakim's treatment in Hungary, and cheered at every evidence of kindness he was shown after that, marveled at the courage to do this not only for himself, but also with his toddler son, experienced his dearth of choices, his anxiety, with him. I recommend this entire series with all my heart.
