I loved Mary Barton when I read it a couple of years ago, and was told that North and South is less bleak… the person who told me that must have read a different book! A real time capsule of a novel, incredibly bleak with flashes of brilliance. “He is my first olive: let me make a face while I swallow it” is one of the most memorable pieces of dialogue I’ve ever read - just so good
