The Mystery of the Dinosaur Bones
by David A. Adler
Woohoo! It's only January 1st and I've already read a book!
Ok, I have to admit it's a chapter book and I've read it before (but not since 2nd grade). So, should it still count? Sure, why not?
I showed my 7 year old niece her mom's autographed(!) copy (the author visited our elementary school) and she asked if I could read it to her and, of course, I obliged.
Here are some thoughts while I read this out loud:
- This is the only book I read in the series, but Cam Jansen's red hair and signature "Click" have stayed with me after all these years.
- I can't help making comparisons between Cam's photographic memory and attention to detail to Shawn Spencer's abilities from USA's Psych.
- When Eric mentions getting a souvenir for his brother Howie and twin sisters, I remembered another book that Adler wrote featuring Eric's siblings. I had long forgotten the title, but after a quick Google search, I found out it was the Fourth Floor Twins series. Anyone else remember this?
- While I noticed some moments of lack of interest from my niece (perhaps due to age and/or short attention span), she wanted to continue reading to find out what happened next.
- The illustrations from my old edition made Cam look more tomboyish. My niece saw the cover and thought Cam was the girl on the far left. Now, I want to compare the drawings between the older and most recent editions.
- Growing up, I loved mysteries and looking back, children's mysteries (books and tv shows), for me, were a great way to learn critical thinking skills by making connections between the clues presented in the story.
Re-reading this book brought back so many early memories I have associated with reading. I want to check out more from this series as well as other chapter books I can read with my niece. Any recommendations?
