My Demon of Fire by Rosemary A. Johns

4.0

I'm still a huge fan of Johns' books and I was therefore very excited when I managed to get an arc for this one. Johns has created an incredibly complex world and almost all (if not all!) of her stories are in some way connected and taking place in the same universe. We already met one of the Demons in the Rebel Gods series and ever since then I was quite excited to dive into the demon realm. And I was pleasantly surprised!

Since Johns is one of my auto-read authors I don't read the blurbs of her books anymore. If I see her name on the cover, I know that I want and need that book. I could therefore just dive into the book and enjoy the ride. And what a wonderful and amazing ride it has been. If the writing style of Johns' other books wasn't for you, you might want to give this book a chance anyway. The writing is still good, but a little less emotional and therefore easier to follow.

I also think, compared to the other books, that the plot in this book is way more prominent and that the characters have way more focus on their goals and what they are actually trying to achieve in this world. Which doesn't mean we're not getting to see everything this world has to offer, because we are. Johns show us, in a very natural way, the dangers and all the politics and she makes sure to introduce us to some very demon specific customs and traditions.

Despite the fact that the plot is a little more prominent and despite the fact that the writing is a little less emotional, the characters are still the true stars of the story. I love how both characters feel realistic and developed from the start. They both have a history, a story to tell, a complete and intriguing personality and I love how Johns makes sure that even though there is some tension these characters are eventually a perfect fit.

I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
