O Caledonia by Elspeth Barker

It has the g-slur (against roma) within it and treats them as a costume, so for that it's 0 stars. w/o that It would be higher rated

I greatly enjoyed this book, and could see myself rereading it, which i dont like doing. I enjoyed watching Janet grow up, even though i was annoyed with her family and society at every turn. I could relate to her a lot in her outcast role, that was always daydreaming and never present. Lila was my favourite character and Nanny my least favourite, so much so that I would cross her name out whenever I came across it.

I thought it was greatly written and only really disliked it at the very end right before Janet dies for personal disdain for that particular emotion. I could've read a full book of Janet's life that ended had a happy ended of her living alone with Claws and her own cats, but sadly thats not what this book is and I found her death very unimportant to the story, despite trying to figure out who had done it - competely going against the point of the book lol.

The introduction was also amazingly written and for some reason one of my favourite parts of the book, not to say it was better just that it was good. Another fun things was I noticed in the first few chapters birds were brought up constantly, 4 different ones within like the first chapter, and I found myself noting whenever a bird was mentioned in the book, up until Claws introduction.

My favourite things about the book were the introduction, the very first paragraph, the constant mention of birds, and watching Janet grow into her outcast role so I could say "she's just like me"
