My Best Friend's Exorcism
by Grady Hendrix
This novel had everything I could want from a YA horror story taking place in the 80s. Lots of references to music and movies and that same eerie vibe that 80s horror movies have.
It also has a lot of nods to horrible things that you wouldn't even bat an eye at in the 80s, such as misogyny, racism, gaslighting and toxic masculinity. All described in a way, that is supposed to make the reader angry.
I know all of this sounds like it would make for a bad read, but it just emphasises the feeling of not being safe and makes you worry that much more about the characters. You know it's bad, when you worry more about a character being raped, than actually being possessed by one of the most powerful demons from hell.
There are issues with the story, which is why it wasn't a 5 star read for me. Except for the two main characters, the others feel flat and undeveloped. There are some plot holes, not major, just some that ended up annoying me a bit.
