Like reading a horror novel from the perspective of the monster; at times disturbing, yet deliciously detached from the emotion of fear when describing horrific events. I never quite got a grasp on the genre of this novel, and that was as much a part of its atmosphere as the characters themselves. All at once a narrative of a haunting, a high-seas adventure, a quest for vengeance, the discovery and then loss of a found family, and so much more to be found in this story that twists around itself in exciting ways that are at once mysterious and revelatory. So glad I picked this up.
I was hesitant because this is based in a pre-established universe from a well-loved podcast series, but it was rich with character and depth that was removed enough from the mythos of its origins that it was no hindrance. However, having listened to a few episodes now, the story is enhanced greatly by its backdrop. I knew instantly I'd be returning to this again in the future. Maybe if this Faceless Old Woman gets elected mayor!
