A book that, on paper, I should have enjoyed.
It was boring.
Edit: Upon a second read it is a bit better. It does have some amazing written, poetic lines and the plot isn't all that boring, save for the bits concerned with the fuedal warfare (which, I get it, is basically the synopsis of the book). Through direct comparison, you could make a case for this being the Scottish Phantom of the Opera: gothic setting, love triangles, a love for the arts. Perhaps Leroux was taking some notes...
