The Science of Storytelling by Will Storr

4.0

I really enjoy the exercise of writing, the pure introspective action of seating down and creating something fascinates me. However, I have not read too much on 'how' to write, after devouring Stephen King's On Writing I learnt a lot, but was never able to find a second book to continue my learnings with. This one was quite good and even though is not 'revolutionary' it gave me really good insights on what makes a good story - from 'where does a story starts' to reconstructing realities in out heads, immersive world modelling, human conflict or emotional arcs all the way to answering the ultimate question 'who am I?'
The book ends with a great appendix where everything we've learned up to this point is put into practice with an actual short story example - which is linked to key paragraphs on the book.
In summary, this book is a great companion if you are looking to improve your storytelling skills.
